  • Provide a water source year around, various water depths is best.

  • Provide shelter in the form of stick/debris piles, fallen logs, snags, leaf piles, shrubs, trees or bird houses.

  • Add native pollinator and host plants.

  • Remove invasive plants.

  • Decrease turf grass, replace with pollinator and host plants.

  • Leave the leaves.

  • Save the stems.

  • Provide supplementary food as necessary (i.e. bird seed, nectar)

  • Pesticides and herbicides do not discriminateeven "organic" versions.

  • Lights on at night disturb normal plant and animal cycles (true for humans too) so turn the lights off.

Check out Habitat Builders YouTube Channel. We pivoted to virtual presentations during the pandemic and have some great videos on native plants from the late Dr. Larry Mellichamp, composting, ruby-throated hummingbirds, trees, managing wildlife in your yard, attracting pollinators, attracting birds and creating wildlife habitat.

Habitat Builders is a Chapter of the NCWF, you can find more information about NCWF here and register for events all over the state here. On the east side of Union County, our sister Chapter holds events and volunteer opportunities. More about the Union County Wildlife Chapter here.

Habitat Builders works with lots of other like-minded groups in the area. There is so much to learn from each of these organizations. Click each logo to go to their websites. Many have educational and volunteer events too.
